Find your home style with these tips from interior designers

I can pick a nice cushion, artwork or candle, no problem. But when my collection of cool things come together, they often don't work in the space.

I lack the ability to take a big-picture approach to decorating my home, and Perth interior decorator Zoe Gilpin says it's not just me.

"People can get stuck in the trap of following trends and trying to reproduce catalogues and store displays instead of creating an interior space they love," she says.

"As shoppers, we can get sucked into impulse purchases which leads to mismatched interiors or too many items."

My lounge room feels so seen.

I spoke to Ms Gilpin and Warrnambool interior designer Jess Griffey for their top styling tips — and traps to avoid.

How to Decorate Small Spaces Like a Pro

Decorating small spaces can feel like an impossible puzzle. You want to fit as much in as possible, but the room mustn't feel cramped. You want it to be filled with personality, but it can't look chaotic and cluttered. But it's possible to have a small space that's as stylish (or perhaps even more so) as their sprawling counterparts. Whether you’re starting out in a studio apartment or choosing to live a more minimalist existence, you don’t need to sacrifice style. We’ve gathered our favorite ideas for decorating small spaces to help you tackle your own petite dwelling.

You may need a desk and a dining table, but do you really need them 24-7? Consider installing furnishings that can fold up when not in use. You’ll free up floor space and avoid the stacks of mail and work that inevitably pile up on these surfaces. If you have a one-wall kitchen, folding doors can conceal clutter when not in use.

The 9 Kitchen Trends We Can’t Wait to See More of In 2020

It’s a new decade and with this extra fresh start, we wanted to kick off 2020 with what has proven to be THE crowd favorite. You all really like kitchens and good thing because we do too.  There is a certain fantasy that the kitchen holds that makes us want to double-tap, but at the same time they are hard and stressful to design so you want to have one that looks unique and creative, but not dated. It’s where we gather to cook, eat, laugh, create school science projects that will likely explode, etc. So, getting to dream about what your future kitchen could be like is intoxicating.

Now, this year in particular is filled with some very unexpected, very cool trends/ideas that even I am surprised I really like. As with any trend piece we do, these trends are simply here to spark your creativity and let you daydream a little. It’s about new ideas but not negating how much we like classic kitchens, too. So let’s kitchen dream together, shall we? It’s 2020 and the sky is the limit.

Decorating is not an easy process, even for the most qualified experts. A great interior requires materials that are in line with the space's architecture. It requires objects that reflect the owner's character but also pieces that are timeless and scaled proportionally. It also needs to strike the right balance between traditional and modern. But above all, it requires a story—one that will dictate every design decision that needs to be made for the space. This is what interior designer Patrick Sutton in his new book, Storied Interiors.
